Maths at Hornsby Heights Primary School is an interactive, engaging learning process focusing on developing a strong understanding of mathematical concepts and catering to individual abilities.
Ten
Program sets clear expectations against the mathematics syllabus on what children should be able to do.
Targeted early numeracy intervention program (TEN) provides short, sharp, frequent numeracy sessions. This program strategically targets activities on addition and subtraction. It regularly monitors student progress.
Mathletics
All students K to 6 have access to the Mathletics website and can actively participate in an interactive computer program to support classroom programs. The program uses
step by step animation to guide students through mathematical concepts.
Maths Competitions
Children are encouraged to participate in external Math competitions, including the UNSW International Maths Test, with many being awarded distinctions and credits in their age divisions.
Maths Olympiad
Another competition that children in Years 3 to 6 are involved in every year is Maths Olympiad. Children firstly qualify by sitting a test and then they are eligible to compete in the 5 sections of the competition. Each week they meet with one of the teachers to learn strategies and train for the different competitions.
Working Mathematically
Working mathematically is incorporated into all strands of Mathematics across all stages. In stages 2 and 3 Newman's Prompts is used as a scaffold for students to follow when solving mathematical problems.
NAPLAN
Students in Year 3 and 5 participate in the National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy in Term 2.
