Positive Behaviour Engaging Learners
Hornsby Heights Public School uses the Positive Behaviour Engaging Learners (PBEL) program. The philosophy of this program aims to improve outcomes for all students by creating sustainable school-wide, classroom and individual systems of support that acknowledge the link between positive behaviour and enhanced learning environments.
PBEL provides students and staff at Hornsby Heights Public School with a positive and proactive system for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviours.
Our core values are ‘Respect', ‘Responsibility' and ‘Personal Best'. For each core value there are behaviour expectations represented throughout the school environment.

Teaching:
PBEL emphasises explicit teaching of core values and expectations. Behaviour expectations are taught in all classes across the school on a weekly or needs basis. Expectations are also reinforced in school assemblies and communicated through our school newsletter.
Awards:
· Free and Frequent – these include quality teaching, positive praise, individualised student support programs, Gumnut Awards, personalised teacher run systems.
Free and Frequent rewards are personalised to suit each class, however, they also include our Gumnut Awards.
· Short Term Intermittent –whole school systems such as extra lunch/recess time when our ‘gumnut barrel’ reaches our goal line. Each week, 15 Gumnut Awards are drawn out of the barrel and those students receive a $1 canteen voucher.
· Long and Strong – awards presented at assembly – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Students can receive a ‘PBEL’ sticker when they demonstrate the school values of ‘Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best’.
